City of Wollongong Traffic Committee
The Roads and Traffic Authority is legislated as the organisation responsible for the control of traffic on all roads in NSW. The RTA has delegated certain aspects of the control of traffic on local roads to the Councils of Local Government Areas.
The City of Wollongong operates a Local Traffic Committee to seek RTA and Police advice on the exercising of these delegations. The Committee is a Technical Review Committee which considers the technical merits of any proposal put to it and also ensures that any proposal put forward by Council meets current RTA technical guidelines.
Membership of the Committee is made up of four voting members:
- a representative of Council
- a representative of the NSW Police Force
- arepresentative of the RTA
- a local State Memeber of Parliament or their nominee
Wollongong is served by two NSW Police Local Area Commands and by four state members. The vote is only valid for the local member or police officer representing the area in which the concern is located, which ensures there are only four votes taken on any issue.
Informal members of the Committee include representatives from the three bus companies of Wollongong.
The Committee meets once a month to review concerns raised by the public via letter or email to Council.
The resolutions of the Committee are reviewed by Senior Officers prior to implementation.
