We provide a number of walks and tours of the Garden and its annex sites, including:
Group Garden Tours: Staff can run guided garden tours in the electronic buggy on a request basis for $12 per person. The buggy can accommodate up to 10 people.
To book a tour contact the Garden's Administration Office on 4227 7667 with a preferred tour date and time between 930am and 2pm on weekdays.
If your group is larger than 10 we can book back-to-back tours where one group enjoy a coffee from the garden's mobile coffee cart while the other enjoys the 45-60 minute tour. These tours commence near our main entrance off Murphys Avenue.
Garden Discovery Buggy Tours: The Friends of Wollongong Botanic Garden offer regular 45-minute garden tours in their electronic buggy. Check the event calendar for any upcoming tours. The tours commence near the Duck Pond. Bookings not required. Gold coin donations encouraged with funds raised supporting conservation projects at the garden.
Bush Walks: Join one of our experienced horticulturalists on a journey through one of the Illawarra's many walking trails. These guided walks offer expert knowledge on the local area. Check the event calendar for any upcoming bush walks.
Nocturnal Walks: Explore our beautiful garden under the mysterious cloak of darkness. You will be led by staff with many years of experience and a wealth of knowledge on the plants and animals that call the Garden home.
After a talk and presentation on animal life in the Garden we will head off to explore Garden to see who we can spot. Animals that may be encountered include Tawny Frogmouths, Possums, Eastern Dwarf Tree Frogs, and a whole bunch of mini beasts, including the bizarre glass shrimps and slightly scary Giant Water Spider.
Participants will need to bring a torch, wear walking shoes and dress for the cool temperatures that we can expect once the sun goes down.
The garden becomes a place of magic as the night falls and even if we don’t see many of its hidden animals, the experience of walking through it at night is one you will never forget.
Theatrical Ghost Tours
- Ghost of Courtney Puckey: Join Courtney Puckey on a theatrical walk through his Estate at North Wollongong. Puckey was a chemist and a salt maker in the early half of the 20th Century. He will share his memories of work, family and the times of his beloved Estate which is now an annex of Wollongong Botanic Garden. The walk starts with a light afternoon tea and a chat near the Lagoon's Car Park in Stewart Park. Look out for a well- dressed gentleman in a bowler hat and beard.
- Step Back in Time at Gleniffer Brae: Join Sid Hoskins, the original owner of Gleniffer Brae on a theatrical tour will share some of the histories of house and surrounding gardens. The tour starts in the lounge room of this beautiful old home with a light afternoon tea and chat.
- Eric Winter's Walk: Join Eric Winter on his walk from Discovery Centre to Gleniffer Brae. Eric, the Hoskins' gardener at the Manor House, lived at ‘Cratloe Cottage’ [now the Discovery Centre]. He would often walk to work, so why not join him on a re-enactment of this walk through the Botanic Garden. He will share his memories of the past and comment on the Garden today.
