Like many other communities in Australia, Wollongong has an ageing population. In 2006 there were 28,726 people 65 and over and by 2016 this number grew to 35,934. Over the next 20 years we’re expecting this number to grow by a further 38.5%. Our population is continuing to age because people are living longer, not having as many children and the baby boomer generation is reaching retirement age.
The Ageing Plan 2018-2022 sets out how Council will work towards making Wollongong a place where our cities older residents are supported to remain involved, connected and valued in their communities. It has been informed by research and consultation with our community.
