Events and programs
Through our environmental events and programs , we encourage residents to take part in a a wide variety of activities that tackle local and national environmental concerns.
Every year Wollongong City Council takes part in Clean Up Australia Day activities, Bushcare and World Environment Day events.
As a Council we also run programs to encourage residents to care more for their immediate environment through our Rise and Shine program and Sustainable Illawarra activities.
We strongly encourage residents and visitors to do whatever they can to help protect and preserve Wollongong’s beautiful natural environment.

Whytes Gully landfill tour and Materials Recycling Facility virtual tour
Saturday 14 and Monday 16 November
Time: 10am – 12pm each day
Location: Pick up and drop off at Discovery Centre, Botanic Gardens Wollongong.
Would you like to find out where your recyclables go after they are collected or perhaps you are interested in going behind the scenes to look at the technologies and environmental measures which have been implemented to manage Whytes Gully landfill?
Now is your chance. Call Council’s Green Team on 4227 7105 to reserve your place in one of these workshops. Be quick as numbers are limited!
The tour is free of charge to Wollongong residents. A fee applies to residents of suburbs outside of the Wollongong Local Government Area.
Op Shop till you drop!

Collection points:
9am outside Corrimal District Library, Short Street, Corrimal.
9.15am outside Wollongong City Council, Burelli St, Wollongong
Return trip – drop off at Corrimal 2.40pm and Wollongong 3pm.
Come and be a part of Sustainable Illawarra’s Avoid, Reuse, Recycle clothes shopping tour. You will have the opportunity to visit as many as eight local op shops from Dapto to Fairy Meadow. A qualified fashion stylist and clothing re-use expert will be on board to assist you in learning how to make smart shopping choices. By purchasing preloved clothing you are living more sustainably and being kind to our environment.

Participants will need to bring along their own lunch and a drink. Morning tea will be provided.
