Development control plans and policies
Wollongong City Council has a number of polices and plans relating to the management of stormwater and flooding.
One of the main documents dealing with flooding is the 'DCP 54 - Managing our flood risks'. The adopted plan will manage flood risks on the floodplains throughout Wollongong by increasing public awareness and implementing tougher restrictions for high flood risk land to control the potential impact of development.
It will introduce graded flood risk categories of flood affected land including low, medium and high risk. This information is included in Section 149 (pt5) of the Planning Certificates for completed studies. This section of the certificate is recommended when purchasing land.
The Drainage Design Code, Conduct Blockage Policy and On Site Stormwater Detention Code aim to:
- manage stormwater resulting from development;
- achieve a uniform standard of stormwater drainage designs for all developments;
- increase public convenience and public safety.
It is important these documents are read in conjunction with each other when considering development on flood prone land.
For information on Council's requirements for development on flood prone lands, we advise you view:
- Managing our flood risks - DCP 54;
- Drainage design code;
- NSW Government Floodplain Development Manual 2005.
This documetns are available on the right or from our Reference library - Level 1, 41 Burelli Street Wollongong. Alternatively, you may wish to engage the services of a Consulting Civil Engineer who will advise you of your development opportunities.
