Local history and information
Drawing on a wide range of resources, the Library's Local history collection provides a valuable source of information on the history and development of the Illawarra from 1799 to the present.
The collection includes an extensive range of books, over 17,000 images, more than 500 maps, local newspapers from 1856 onswards and more than 1,000 manuscripts.
The Local Studies Library collects and preserves Wollongong's history so that it is available to current and future researchers. If you are researching early settlers, land grants, heroes and villains, flora and fauna then visit Local Studies.
The Local Studies Library is an invaluable resource for:
- School students
- University and TAFE students
- Business people - especially those starting a small business
- Family historians
- Job seekers
- Historical researchers
- Local community groups
Enquiries
Due to the rare and valuable nature of the historical material kept by the Local Studies Library the main collection is only available in one central location.
Trained and experienced staff are available to assist you with your enquiries. Photocopies can be made of most materials.
The Local Studies Library is open to visitors Monday - Saturday. Phone and email enquiries are also welcome.
Donations
Help the library preserve our local heritage. Donations of both historical and contemporary material relating to the Illawarra are always welcome. Photographs may also be lent to the Local Studies Library for copying. Items will only be accepted without encumbrances, and when they are relevant to the scope of the Local Studies collection.Suburb Profiles
Suburb profiles have been developed by Library staff using the resources available in the Wollongong Local Studies Library. The pages provide historical and other information about suburbs in the Wollongong City Council area. They also include links to other sites where useful information may be found. Details of resources used in preparing these pages are available in the Bibliography. Profiles for all of the Suburbs listed below are not yet available. If you cannot find information for the Suburb you are interested in please ring our Local Studies Library on 4227 7414 or email. Staff will be happy to help you find the information you need.
