Supporting National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day

Wollongong City Council is supporting National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day on Wednesday 6 May 2020 and encourages all in our community to say no to domestic and family violence.

The National Day is an opportunity to reflect and remember all the victims of domestic abuse and for our community to express their belief that everyone has the right to be free from harm and to live without fear of violence or abuse especially at home.

“Sadly, we all too often hear about incidents of domestic violence in the news, and this is not acceptable. Everyone should be able to live safely and happily in their own home, especially women and children,’’ Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“We know that there is real concern that the current Coronavirus situation is putting people at greater risk of domestic violence. In fact, there are already reports of a spike in family violence. This can range from emotional to physical abuse. The significance of this national day serves as a stark reminder for all of us that we have a responsibility to stand up, and speak out against violence within the home or anywhere for that matter.’’
