The Grateful Portrait Project

This festive season we're celebrating the diversity and richness of young people with The Grateful Portrait Project.

We asked people aged 12 to 24 years to reflect on their experiences in 2020 and to share images that show what’s important in their lives. They each also provided a statement about what they're grateful for.

Selected entries will be on display in Crown Street Mall from 12 November until the end of January 2021. Check out the exhibition next time you're in the City Centre.

Our top image shows five of the entries. Statements for these images from left to right are below:

  1. I am grateful for colour and art and all the people who help make my imagination into reality. People who help just because  they like helping are very special and hardworking and I am grateful for having lots of those people in my life.
  2. I am grateful for my best friend. Through the tough times of 2020 and out year 12 experiences my best friend and I have relied upon each other to put a smile on the others face! Whether that’s cracking a joke or just spending time together. I am grateful to have her and her laugh!
  3. I am grateful for my family and friends because they always support me. My dog Sizzles makes me laugh when he plays “dead dog” lying on his back.
  4. I am grateful for the resilience of the local art community and the empowerment it gives me to express myself through creativity. Whether on stage or in front of a camera, performance art provides an outlet for my anxiety and allows me to embrace the things that make me unique.
  5. I am grateful for the people I love around me who love me in return. Nothing is more special to me than my relationship with my family and friends, and the time I spend with them.

You can also read interviews with three of our entrants on the Wollongong City Centre website.

We'd like to thank everyone who's been part of this project - we're grateful for YOU!
