Wollongong’s Australia Day 2020 will be an opportunity to come together and celebrate community.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Cr Gordon Bradbery AM said this summer has been a difficult and challenging time.

“We are planning Australia Day 2020 as a fun and exciting day where all families and community members can get together, take part in plenty of activities, support each other, and celebrate the strength and resilience that we, as a community, can show in these times.

“We’ll have a light show and LED performances, a drumming extravaganza, lantern parade, farm yard pets, inflatable thongs, and more at the Australia Day 2020 event in Belmore Basin and Osborne Park.

“I encourage all families and community members to join in and have fun. Whether you wish to take part in the Aquathon or stand up paddle boarding, you can. We will also encourage everyone to stroll along in the lantern parade or drum along in the Drum de Gong which will finish off the evening.”

Among the highlights of the day, there will be:

*  An Aquathon—the biggest in Australia—for all age groups

*  A stage for young children—nought to five—with recyclables goods to play with a giant musical area and treasure hunt

*  Two outdoor extravaganzas with whip cracking fun and farm yard pets

*  Kite flying high on Flagstaff Hill

*  The annual march and firing of the guns at Battery Park

*  An inflatable thong race

*  Skydivers dropping in during the day

*  A sand sculpture competition

*  An interactive display by the Wollongong Rollerhawks

The celebrations will feature a light show over Belmore Basin rather than the traditional fireworks display.

“We have decided to forego the fireworks and fire displays this year,” Cr Bradbery said. “Instead we will feature a lighting show over Belmore Basin with a few little surprises along the way.”

During the day we will be encouraging all community members to donate to the NSW RFS and the NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service [WIRES].
