Upgrade for Keiraville shopping precinct
Wollongong City Council will improve pedestrian access and safety in the Keiraville shopping precinct with a road upgrade and refreshed streetscape.
Council has begun works in the area around Gipps Road between Grey Street and William Street, Keiraville.
Council is planning to:
- Replace the existing worn coloured asphalt with new paving and black asphalt in front the main row of shops on Gipps Road, between Grey and William Streets. The new paving is also resistant to damage from chairs and tables.
- Improve pedestrian safety by installing a new raised pedestrian crossing to replace the existing level crossing in Gipps Road.
- Install new accessible ramps at the intersection of Gipps Road and Grey Street. Which will make it easier for people with disability and those pushing prams to use the footpaths.
- Replace two aged trees in front of the Keiraville shops.
- Prune hedges around the crossing to improve visibility.
- Install new loops so that bicyclists can secure their bikes on the footpath.
While the work is underway, we will ensure people can still visit the local shops and businesses. There will be traffic control in place as we construct the raised crossing and there will be updated signage to alert pedestrians and drivers of any change, including when street parking will not be available.
The project is expected to be complete by end of February, weather permitting.
