Western Suburbs Pool Closed due to Break-in
Wollongong City Council is appealing for public assistance following a break-in at Western Suburbs Pool overnight.
The pool will remain closed today after pool staff discovered the break-in at 5.30am this morning, Wednesday 15 January, and contacted NSW Police.
As a result of the break-in, the Pool’s security shutters have been damaged, an office window has been smashed, food items, a small fridge and a TV have been stolen from the kiosk and a lane rope was wrapped around some swim flags.
The toddlers and main pools were also soiled and Council staff will today empty and clean them.
“Please, if anyone knows anything about these criminal acts, we ask you to contact Lake Illawarra Police,’’ Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.
“We’ve had to close the pool today due to the level of damage and this is so disappointing. We’ve had to waste thousands of litres of water emptying, cleaning and refilling the pools, not to mention time and money. Whoever broke in obviously spent some time in the pool area and I hope someone saw something.
“I am extremely disappointed to think there are individuals in our community who would damage our recreational facilities. These assets are owned and paid for by the people of Wollongong. I can’t accept this as normal and am disgusted and greatly disappointed by this act.
“We apologise to anyone who had planned to visit this popular pool today. We will be working as quickly as we can to reopen it.’’
It’s anticipated the pool will reopen tomorrow.
People can report information to NSW Police on 1800 333 000.
