Wollongong Welcomes Governor-General

Thursday 10 October 2019

Learning about Council’s diverse environmental initiatives, programs and strategies were the focus of an informal visit between Their Excellencies the Governor-General the Hon David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) and Mrs Linda Hurley, Wollongong Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM, Councillors and Council staff today, Thursday 10 October.

The Governor-General and Mrs Hurley visited Council’s Administration Building to meet with staff and learn about Council’s take on Food Organics Garden Organics (or FOGO) trial, plastic-free initiatives and waste diversion.

“Linda and I are delighted to be back in Wollongong for the first time since I was appointed Governor-General. It is always fantastic to visit the region and catch-up with the local community,’’ The Governor-General said.

The meeting is one of their stops on a two-day visit to Wollongong, which will also include their attendance to the One Door Illawarra Luncheon in recognition of World Mental Health Day.

“I’m proud to welcome back to Wollongong his Excellency and Mrs Hurley. The Governor-General is representative of the great Wollongong diaspora – those who are sons and daughters of our city. He is a prime example that no matter where you go or what you do, the connection to this beautiful place between the mountains and the sea is never lost,’’ Cr Bradbery said.

“We are, and have been for many years, doing great work in areas of sustainability and environment at Council. It’s an honour to be able to share information about these initiatives with the Governor-General and Mrs Hurley.

“I know there is a lot of community interest in Wollongong’s own Food Organic Garden Organic or FOGO trial that’s currently underway in about 1600 households across the city – but we’re doing so much more than that. During the meeting we’ll provide details on how Council is proactively working to respond to climate change.

“Staff will share information on how our 32-year-old Administration Building has become a world-leader in sustainability and earnt a 6 Star Green Star Rating from the Green Building Council of Australia, about what we’re doing in terms of waste diversion at Whyte’s Gully and our landfill gas capture plans.”
