Council’s Economic Development Strategy Targets Jobs Growth

Tuesday 24 September 2019

The creation of some 10,500 jobs, higher incomes and providing greater local opportunities for our talented workforce are the three targets of Council’s Economic Development Strategy 2019-2029.

The Strategy was endorsed at Monday night’s Council meeting and builds on the earlier 2013-2023 document. The updated Strategy provides a number of actions to support an innovative and sustainable economy in the City.

“A key theme running through this document is a renewed focus on increasing the number of high-quality jobs in Wollongong and this Strategy aims to double the growth of the past 10 years,’’ said Wollongong Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM.

“By preparing a document like this we’re able to research and identify key areas for growth and to develop a plan to support our City’s future needs. This document provides stability, direction and focus. We’re taking the lead to drive Wollongong into the future, choosing our City’s destiny and making sure it’s the best home for our residents.’’

The strategy identifies three key goals – to generate 10,500 new jobs in the next decade, to lift the median incomes and generate new jobs in industries that are higher-paying, and to align the target industries with Wollongong’s existing home-grown talent pool including commuters and University of Wollongong graduates.

“This is a City-wide Strategy and not one that Council alone can implement,’’ Cr Bradbery said.

“Collaboration is vital for our success and this Strategy provides a strong framework for us to work with our key partners across the City and with State Government to deliver improved local employment opportunities.

“We are seeing growth in Wollongong right now – the cranes on the skyline are helping to deliver essential commercial space. This space will be critical when it comes to delivering on the new jobs targeted in this strategy and attracting more investment.’’
