Rise and Shine sparkles at Lake Illawarra Launch

Tuesday 1 September 2020

The shores of Lake Illawarra provided a picturesque backdrop for the launch of Wollongong City Council’s 35th Rise and Shine campaign.

Rise and Shine is Wollongong City Council’s longest running environmental clean-up program, with last year’s community clean-up involving 112 community groups participating in clean-ups around the Wollongong region, with 13.4 tonnes of rubbish collected.

“The Rise and Shine campaign over its long history has continually shaped and changed our city for the better, and this year will be no different,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“Rise and Shine belongs to the community and is an outstanding example of the amazing work our local volunteers achieve, and reflects the great amount of pride so many of us have for the beauty of Wollongong’s natural environment.”

“This clean-up campaign provides us with a platform for the future. We must continue to think globally and act locally to ensure the sustainability of our city.”

The focus of the 2020 Rise and Shine campaign is on Lake Illawarra and plans are in place to allow community members to participate, while also following NSW Public Health Orders and social distancing guidelines.

Council’s website has a range of information on how people can register a clean-up location, guidelines to follow and how to share details of their efforts. Alternatively, people can contact Customer Service on (02) 4227 7111 for advice and information.
