Welcome to Wollongong City Council's Surf Sense education program for international university students and community groups.
Success criteria
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Understand sun protection and the dangers the sun poses.
- Identify Lifeguards, Lifesavers and what the red and yellow flags mean.
- Understand the services a Lifeguard offers.
- Always swim between the red and yellow flags.
- Know the importance of reapplying sunscreen and having time in shade.
- Know the importance of understanding signage.
- Know where you can safely learn to surf.
- Understand what the Beach Closed flag is.
- Know what they should do if in need of assistance.
- Understand the importance of Float To Survive.
- Understand that No Flags, No Swim is important as there is no rescue equipment available when Lifeguards are not present.
- Understand the dangers of mixing alcohol and swimming.
- Know to take all rubbish with you when leaving the beach.
- Know that when rock fishing, it is law to wear a life jacket.
