Wollongong community invited to join the Global Learning Festival

Thursday 19 August 2021

We’re inviting our community to join us as we take part in this year’s Global Learning Festival.

Wollongong City Council is calling for community organisations, businesses and other community leaders to be a part of this year’s Global Learning Festival by registering their own online event.

The Global Learning Festival is an international week-long celebration held between 8-11 November 2021, that connects people from countries across the world to share in a love of learning.

The festival is open to anyone who wishes to participate, whether by getting involved in a lesson or by applying to host a free online learning event for their community.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said that this was an ambitious event that aimed to bring people together virtually, from around the world, to share knowledge and skills.

“This year is the second time that the Global Learning Festival will run and there will be plenty of online activities on offer for our community members here in Wollongong to participate in,” Cr Bradbery said.

“What’s great about this festival is that anyone can apply to be an organiser for a free online learning event in November. This is an opportunity for local businesses, community organisations and groups to share their knowledge with others and strengthen their presence with their community.

“So if you’re someone with knowledge to share, why not register to get involved? It’s a fantastic opportunity to show the diversity of skills and learning we have here in Wollongong to a global audience.”

This year the theme for the 2021 Global Learning Festival is the UNESCO Sustainable Development Goals, which are the blueprints to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.

“This year’s theme — Sustainable Development Goals — is a broad topic to draw inspiration from and should, hopefully, inspire many creative online events, workshops and activities,” Cr Bradbery.

“It’s important to remember that learning is not something that only happens in the classroom. Instead, learning is something we can achieve every day, throughout our lives within our homes and the broader community.

“One of Council’s goals for the next four years is to create a culture in Wollongong that values and practices lifelong learning and we’ll do this by working with the education leaders within our community.

“Council’s Community Strategic Plan – Out Wollongong 2028 – look at the ways we can implement the Sustainable Development Goals, by achieving our community’s main priorities and aspirations for the future. We’ll be reviewing the community strategic plan next year, and in the meantime, I encourage everyone to take up this opportunity to progress your knowledge and work towards a globally sustainable future by participating in the Global Learning Festival.”

Register your interest in hosting an online event by visiting the Global Learning Festival website. Expressions of Interest to host an event closes Friday 17 September 2021.
