Christmas gift for Primbee cyclists

Thursday 16 December 2021

Christmas is coming early for those who love to ride a bike, run, walk or push a pram in Primbee!

Over the past few months, we’ve been working hard to upgrade the existing shared path along Windang Road from Shellharbour Road to Bakers Lane, making it easier, more accessible and comfortable for people to use.

Wollongong City Council Director Infrastructure + Works (Acting) Glenn Whittaker said that this was an important project that will improve accessibility for Primbee residents and visitors to the area.

“The old shared path along Windang Road was in real need of attention as the concrete panels were broken in sections and had moved over time,” Mr Whittaker said.

“This one was a big and vital project as we upgraded roughly 3.7km of shared pathway. This is a fantastic addition to Council’s increasing network of shared paths, on-road cycleways, pop-up cycleways and other cycling infrastructure.”

Council is working to improving cycling infrastructure across our city as part of our commitment to our recognition as an international Bike City. This project is just one piece of the cycling puzzle and fits into the work Council has been doing as part of our Wollongong Cycling Strategy. The upgrades also reflect Council’s commitment to improve accessibility across the city as part of our Disability Inclusion Action Plan.

The first section of upgrades on the Windang Road shared path are expected to finish before Christmas, pending weather conditions.

In the new year, we’ll start work again along Windang Road to upgrade the remaining section of shared path from Bakers Lane to Boundary Road.

“Our goal is to have this first section of works done and dusted before Christmas so that those who are on holidays or received a bike from Santa, can enjoy the upgraded shared path,” Mr Whittaker said.

“At the same time, we’d like to remind everyone who uses any of our shared paths, roads or cycleways to please follow the road rules. Shared paths are shared spaces and that means stay aware of your surroundings and be mindful of other bike riders and pedestrians.”
