Council services shift to support COVID-safe measures

Friday 25 June 2021

Wollongong City Council has made changes to the delivery of a number of its services to support the NSW Government’s updated COVID measures.

We ask those who are able to wear masks, do so, and that anyone feeling unwell gets tested and stays home until they are feeling better. As always, please follow the advice of NSW Health and comply with the Public Health Orders. By taking these steps, we’re working to support the health, safety and wellbeing of everyone in our community.

Here is a summary of the changes to selected services and programs. We are regularly reviewing the latest advice and will continue to respond to any updated health measures.

Beaton Park and Lakeside Leisure Centres

Masks must be worn inside the centres, including while exercising. Dance and gym classes are limited to 20 people per class, and the 1 person for every 4 square metres applies. Phone bookings on 4227 7755 for Beaton Park or 4227 7600 for Lakeside are recommended, and a limit of one class per person, per day, applies.

Community Centres

Masks must be worn inside and Council staff are contacting those who have hired our facilities to notify them of how the 4 metre rule is being applied to each of the centres.

Community Transport

We’re making changes to the delivery of our community transport services to allow for social distancing on board the buses and some trips will not be going ahead in the coming days. Essential services to doctors’ appointments – except trips to areas of Sydney classified as hotspots – and shopping will continue. Council staff are contacting clients and our volunteers directly to provide details of these changes.

Libraries

Our libraries remain open but we’re asking everyone over the age of 12 to wear a mask and to sign in on entry. For Wollongong Library, entry remains through the Council’s Administration Building front entrance at this time. If we make any changes to access, these will be clearly signposted. Library programs for today Friday 25 June will continue. We are currently reviewing the plans for school holiday activities and some programs have had to be postponed or cancelled as they can not be conducted safely. Please check the Libraries’ website or contact your local library for further information.

Pools

The Continental Pool, Dapto Heated Pool and Beaton Park pools remain open. There is no need to book in for a swim, at this time, but patrons are required to sign in using the QR codes on site and comply with change room capacity limitations. Face masks must be worn when people are indoors.

Russell Vale Golf Club

The club remains open with visitors required to sign in using the QR code and wear a mask when indoors.

Tourist Parks

There is a limit of five visitors per household for cabins and holiday sites. All guests planning to visit the parks over the next week have been contacted and advised of the updated travel restrictions. We will be contacting people with existing bookings shortly, and work with affected customers to make alternative arrangements to meet the updated restrictions where we can.

Wollongong Art Gallery

The Gallery remains open and all those visiting must wear a mask, adhere to social distancing and follow the one person per 4 square metre rule. The Gallery’s programming continues at this time however the school holiday activities planned from Thursday 1 July to Friday 2 July have been cancelled. The remaining school holiday activities are still under assessment.

Wollongong Memorial Gardens

The Gardens remain open but are subject to the 1 person per 4 square metre rules and masks must be worn. Masks must be worn at all indoor areas, including our offices and chapels. Council is working directly with individuals or groups who have current bookings to manage these changes.

Wollongong Youth Centre

The Youth Centre remains open. All visitors must wear masks, follow social distancing advice and observe the one person per 4 square metre rule. Individuals or groups who hire spaces within the centre are being contacted and advised of the updated responsibilities they must follow. School holiday programs are currently under assessment.

Wollongong Botanic Garden

The Garden’s popular school holiday program and plant sale planned for Saturday 26 June have both been cancelled. The Garden remains open, but buggies are currently unavailable. The Sir Joseph Banks Glasshouse is closed until further notice.

We are reviewing plans for Monday night’s Council meeting and these details will be updated over the coming days.

There are no changes to waste collections and bins should be put out as normal. The Wollongong Waste and Resource Recovery Park remains open, and we ask anyone visiting the facility to be mindful of social distancing.
