Lower Crown next on the list for pop-up cycling routes works

We’re getting ready to roll out our pop-up cycleway along lower Crown Street as part of the Wollongong CBD pop-up cycling routes program.

From Friday 28 May, we’ll begin works on the kerb ramps along lower Crown Street before we start to install new safety road cushions and new line marking.

Road cushions, warning signs and bicycle road marking will be installed on the section of Crown Street between Kembla and Corrimal streets to reduce vehicle speed and improve safety.

This work will provide a link between the pop-up cycling route along Kembla Street and the southern footpath along Crown Street between Corrimal Street and the foreshore that has been converted into a shared path with bicycle and pedestrian pavement markings.

There will be no loss of on-street parking along this stretch of road once the works are complete.

“We want to make it easier for everyone, regardless of ability, to ride a bike within the Wollongong CBD,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“This next stage of the Wollongong CBD Pop-Up Cycling Routes program will introduce new safety measures for pedestrians and people on bikes. We’ll be adding road cushions and on-road markings to help calm traffic and make it more appealing for people to opt for more active transport options.”

The works along lower Crown Street are expected to take up to two weeks, weather depending.

At the same time, Council is in the process of designing upgrades to the footpath in lower Crown Street to make it safer and more accessible for pedestrians. These upgrades are planned for the footpath on both sides of the road along Crown Street, between Kembla and Corrimal streets.

We will begin consultation with our community and local businesses soon. Construction for the footpath upgrades is planned for September 2021.
