Author Maya Lee shares her mother’s memoir, ‘The Nazis Knew My Name’

Thursday 17 February 2022

Join us at Wollongong Library as we discover the extraordinary, true story of Australia Slovakian Holocaust survivor Magda Hellinger, as told by her daughter Maya Lee.

We’ll be welcoming Maya Lee to the Library on Wednesday 2 March to discuss her book, The Nazis Knew My Name.

The memoir is based on the personal account of her mother, Magda, and is complemented by further extensive research by Maya. The book includes testimonies from fellow Auschwitz survivors and offers an incredible insight into human nature, the power of resilience and the goodness that can shine through in even the most horrific conditions.

“The team at Wollongong City Libraries is pleased to be able to welcome people back to the library and the opportunity to hear such an interesting and personal author talk will be a real drawcard to our community,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“This story – told by both mother and daughter – shares insights from one of the Jewish women who was charged with the day-to-day running of the administration and works forces in Auschwitz itself.  It’s an important insight into a moment of history, which has had a lasting impact on so many.

“I encourage anyone who is interested in the history of World War II to come along and learn more about this book and the women who offered us this unique perspective. This is a free event, so make sure you book your free ticket online, so you don’t miss out.”
