Let’s celebrate Pride Month together!

Wednesday 27 April 2022

We’re getting ready to celebrate Pride Month in June this year, and we need your help to make it a city-wide celebration!

This year, we’re inviting anyone organising an event in June to celebrate with our LGBTQIA+ community, to express interest in being included in Wollongong City Council’s 2022 Pride Month Calendar.

While, in the past, Council has held Pride Month activities, this is the first time we’ve actively reached out to other groups in the city to facilitate an awareness of events that members of our LGBTIQA+ community, their families, friends and supporters may wish to attend.

“Pride Month is a global event and is a time when our LGBTIQA+ community celebrates with events and activities to raise awareness of issues of equal opportunity and inclusion,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“Pride Month itself marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan in 1969. Over the years many Pride events have been held during the month of June to raise awareness of current issues facing the LGBTIQA+ community, promote dignity, self-affirmation, equal rights, respect and recognition.

“We’re a city which considers our diversity as something to be proud of and we’re pleased to once again take part in this important celebration. This year we’ve got some great events lined up including Queerstories returning to the Wollongong Art Gallery, and Rainbow Storyime with Miss Roxee at Thirroul Library.

“We’re still in the process of finalising our complete program. In the meantime, we’re calling for people who want to promote their Pride Month events via a one-stop calendar of events, to get in touch.”

The full 2022 Pride Month Calendar and program will be shared on our Pride Month webpage soon.

Applications to be included in the Wollongong City Council 2022 Pride Month Calendar are open until 12noon Monday 9 May 2022.
