From event volunteers, committee members to Australian medal recipients, this year’s Lord Mayor Recognition Reception celebrated the remarkable work of a number of Wollongong locals.

On Thursday 25 August, Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM presented more than 80 certificates of recognition to people who have done incredible things across our city.

The event is an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the array of community-minded local people, groups, and organisations along with recognising Australian Medal (AM) and Order of Australian Medal (OAM) recipients.

It is held annually however, due to COVID-19, the event did not run in 2020 and 2021. It was a welcome return as community members were celebrated in the presence of Members of Parliament, Councillors and fellow recipients.

“The recognition reception is an event I especially look forward to. It’s a special time for not only myself, but for our community, to acknowledge the incredible work of our locals,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“Due to COVID, we’ve been unable to hold this event in the last few years. The recipients were a combination of acknowledgements across 2020, 2021, and 2021, hence there was a larger than usual group of people being recognised

“We recognised volunteers from Australia Day and New Year’s Eve events, committee members who help plan local celebrations, people providing above and beyond community service, as well as those who support and sponsor our community events.”

Among the recipients include Bulli Surf Life Saving Club, 2021 NSW Young Woman of the Year Dr Samantha Wade, Healthy Cities Illawarra, #VAXTHEILLAWARRA and Wollongong Roller Hawks.

“I’m honoured to have recognise all these amazing people and would like to once again congratulate and thank them for their hard work and dedication to our community. Each of their efforts has made a difference in our city.” Cr Bradbery said.
