Grand improvements for Coledale

A 400-metre stretch on the beach side of Lawrence Hargrave Drive at Coledale is to be vastly improved for walking, running and cycling as part of the next phase of works on the Grand Pacific Walk.

The project includes the construction of a 400m length of shared pathway, and upgrade works to the existing car park overlooking the beachside camping reserve.

The new pathway will be wider and feature a viewing area, seating and picnic facilities, bins, a drinking fountain and water bottle refill station. There will be added plantings, safety fencing and the current stairs that lead to the beach from the carpark will be rebuilt and new handrails installed.

“The Grand Pacific Walk is an ambitious project and the links that have been already delivered for our community have been so well received,’’ Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“I have no doubt that the news we’re improving this area with its existing narrow bitumen pathway will be welcomed by all those who already visit this space.

“The teams will be working to minimise disruption and have purposefully opted to carry out these works over winter when there are less people using this popular area.’’

The Grand Pacific Walk is a pathway that’ll allow people to walk or ride along the coastline from the Royal National Park to Lake Illawarra.

The walk will link existing pathways with new links like at Coledale, as well as more recent projects including the section between Coalcliff and Stanwell Park.

With good weather, we’re anticipating the new Coledale link and car park will be opened in spring.

We’re also working on plans for another leg of the Grand Pacific Walk for Clifton and it’s anticipated work here will start in early 2022.
