Ride a new path in our Bike City

Wednesday 2 June 2021

Take your two wheels on a different route this World Bicycle Day and discover a new bike path around Wollongong.

Today is World Bicycle Day, a day which celebrates the number of benefits bicycles bring to society. Cycling is great for the environment, provides social interaction and encourages a healthy lifestyle.

To mark the day, we have mapped out a few leisurely cycling routes around Wollongong for our residents and visitors to try – from riding around Lake Illawarra to exploring our coastal shared paths.

“The global day recognises the great benefits bike riding can offer, and we are especially interested in the day given Wollongong has been recently awarded UCI Bike City status” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

The prestigious UCI Bike City Label recognises Wollongong’s long-term commitment to delivering an improved cycling experience for everyone.

“Our city provides a range of cycling opportunities such as shared paths, pump tracks, and on-road cycling opportunities. No matter what your skill level is or your reason for cycling, riding a bike can be enjoyed by everyone,” Cr Bradbery said.

“For this World Bicycle Day, we’re encouraging our community, from our smallest riders to our most experienced, to rediscover our city on two wheels. Enjoy the freedom and benefits of riding on a new bike route.”

There is some useful information on our website for cyclists which includes Wollongong’s cycling guide and map, along with guides on how to ride your bike around our roads, shared pathways and footpaths.

In the meantime, here are some routes you can try out.

A ride through history

Looking for a shorter ride with some history to it? Why not start at the top of Port Kembla Heritage Park? From there you can ride on our shared paths with the sea by your side towards King George V Oval. Keen riders can even depart the route to take a look at Port Kembla’s Hill 60 Lookout to take in the view.

Playground Hop

Located on the edge of Lake Illawarra is a great 12.9km looped bike ride ideal for families that are looking for some playground hopping on their day out. The entire ride is on a shared path starting at Kully Bay Car park and looping around at Hooka Point. Along the ride, families can enjoy the natural views of Lake Illawarra, playgrounds at Holborn Park and Kully Bay Park and stop for lunch along the way.

ABC’s of Wollongong

If you’re looking for a longer ride, why not take on the scenic views of Austinmer, Bulli and Corrimal. The coastal loop which departs from Corrimal along our shared pathway is a 21.8km journey that takes in the surf spray and has numerous opportunities for a cheeky coffee along the way.
