Will you spin right round Lindsay Maynes Park’s criterium track?

Friday 18 June 2021

Wollongong City Council has unveiled plans for the city’s first criterium track planned for Lindsay Maynes Park in Unanderra.

The purpose-built track is to be an off-road cycling facility, which will cater to riders of all levels and will provide an opportunity to ride and race on a closed-loop course. It will be six metres wide, to allow for multiple riders and safe overtaking opportunities.

The criterium track will link to a new shared pathway on Factory Road, which will in turn link to the Princes Highway and allow cyclists to ride to train at this facility.

The asphalt track will be suitable for all ages and skillsets, and can also be used by other non-motorised equipment such as rollerblades or scooters when not in use for cycling events.

“This is an exciting project for our community as it will be a dedicated off-road riding opportunity that will be available for local cycling clubs for their race days, training and skills development,’’ Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“We are committed to improving riding opportunities across the city. We can – and are – improving on-road options and shared pathways and we’re looking to install more bike parking. This track is another link in the chain to better biking.’’

Council is currently calling for community feedback on the facility that will also allow for the city to host safe cycling events.

“We’ve had some top-notch cyclists grow up in Wollongong and go on to represent our city and country at elite levels,’’ Cr Bradbery said.

“It might not be a well-known fact, but Council already has a velodrome in Unanderra. This new facility will be a welcome addition to our existing cycling infrastructure. The track will be built to an approved cycling standard and be a welcome addition to the city’s diverse cycling options. It provides an opportunity to capitalise on the interest that will be generated through hosting the UCI Road Cycling Championships in September 2022.

“However, the track isn’t just about supporting the next generation of professional cyclists. It’s there for our whole community as a safe place to ride and develop skills. It can be used for school cycling education programs and would be available to the Illawarra Academy of Sport and the Illawarra Cycle Club for training and events.’’

Feedback on the criterium track is open until 26 July through Council’s Our Wollongong website.
