Superheroes assemble… Comic Gong is on

Thursday 24 March 2022

Book the Batmobile, fire up your X-wing or tune up the TARDIS – Comic Gong is back for 2022 and it’s going to be epic.

After a smaller-scale Comic Gong in 2021, Wollongong City Libraries is ready for a new chapter in the city’s favourite pop-culture celebration.

The event will be held from 10am-4pm on Saturday 14 May and will feature events and attractions across Lower Crown Street Mall, Wollongong Town Hall, the Art Gallery, Arts Precinct and Wollongong Library.

“I know there will be a lot of very excited people in our community who will be putting a big mark on their calendar to note Comic Gong is back,’’ Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“This library-led event from Wollongong City Council is hugely popular and attracts people of all ages and from all walks of life to our city centre for a fantastic day out.

“Whether you choose to get dressed up, or just attend in your civvies, it really is an epic day that embraces and celebrates pop culture in a really family-friendly way.’’

Comic Gong features elements that celebrate comics, graphic novels, gaming and cosplay. While the program is yet to be launched, I can say that some of the attractions of this event includes the cosplay competition, exhibitor and trade halls in two locations, face painting and the always-popular pinball machines.

Cr Bradbery said as preparations get underway for Comic Gong 2022, there was an opportunity for community volunteers to get involved.

“Right now, we’re keen to hear from those who might like to join our all-important volunteer contingent to the day,’’ he said.

“Events like this rely on many people to support its smooth running, so if you think you’d like to be involved in the behind-the-scenes action, I’d encourage you to register your interest on the Comic Gong pages of the Library’s website by Wednesday 30 March.’’

Volunteer opportunities include bump-in and bump-out, supporting exhibitors, activities and exhibitors, and carrying out surveys that gather information that is used to inform future library-led events.’’
