Pump up the jam? Seeking feedback on Figtree’s bike track

Wollongong City Council is keen to hear feedback about the hugely popular bike track in Figtree’s Harry Graham Park.

The track was built late last year and was part of an innovative project designed to reduce the damage being done to nearby natural areas by passionate riders.

Council collaborated with young people and their families from the Figtree area on the track’s design, and the construction was guided by professional trail builders.

“This has been a really positive project and one that has delivered some very helpful learnings as a result,’’ Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“What I really like about this project is that rather than just asking people to stop riding in natural areas and Bushcare sites, we’ve taken a proactive approach to work with young people and understand what they’re doing and why – and then look at an alternative solution.

“There was always going to be a review phase as part of this bike track. Now it’s time to broaden the conversation and not only hear from the users, but also residents and other park goers about what works, what may be improved and if this is the most appropriate location in Figtree for this to continue.’’

“The project has shown us there is significant community interest in cycling opportunities like this for our young people and it’s important we get them right,’’ Cr Bradbery said.

Cr Bradbery said Council will consider all feedback received as we work through the decision-making process for the longer-term location of a bike track in the Figtree area.

“It’s important we get this right and from those who live in the area, and use the park, as this does influence Council’s decisions,’’ he said.

“That said, we will also consider the safety of users, advice from NSW Police and the impact on the local environment as well.

“I know other residents will be interested about what happens here, too, as we have other bike tracks in the pipeline for 2021 in our northern and southern areas. While the plans for these are very much in their infancy, we will be using this process and what we uncover, to guide future decisions for other locations.’’

To support feedback opportunities Council staff will be onsite at Harry Graham Park on Tuesday 25 May and Thursday 27 May from 2.30-4.30pm, as well as on Saturday 29 May from 1-3pm. People can also share their thoughts through Council’s website, or by scanning the QR code on the onsite signage and filling in an online form.

Feedback closes on Monday 14 June 2021.
