Phoenix score with welcome to Wollongong

Wednesday 25 November 2020

Wollongong residents will have a soccer-filled summer with the Wellington Phoenix calling Wollongong home for the duration of the A-League season in 2020/2021.

The team have confirmed their move to Wollongong as they continue their preparation for the upcoming national competition. The club will keep its base out of the University of Wollongong and play home games from WIN stadium.

The A-League season is set to begin 27 December and will continue through June 2021. During this time the Phoenix will plan to play 13 home games in Wollongong, the first of which will be held Saturday 2 January against Sydney FC.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM welcomed the announcement that the Wellington Phoenix would call Wollongong home for the duration of their season.

“We are excited to have the Phoenix in Wollongong and offer them a home in Australia. We are eager to have the team become part of the Wollongong community, and likewise, have the region rally around the presence of a professional A-League team.

“We have an enthusiastic sporting community in Wollongong and the Phoenix’s presence is certain to inspire athletes from all codes and spectators alike. We are looking forward to partnering with the team while they are in our city and bringing our community some free skills workshops and opportunities to meet with the players.”
