Support the city’s push on cycling

Thursday 19 November 2020

Just days after adopting its Cycling Strategy 2030, Wollongong City Council is calling for members for two cycling-focussed advisory groups.

Council is setting up a Cycling Technical Advisory Group, and a Cycling Champions Advisory Group. Both groups aim to support different elements of Council’s cycling focus now, and into the future.

“These are two great opportunities for people who are passionate about cycling and Council’s plans to support cycling across the city,’’ Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“The groups have different purposes, but both are focussed on supporting the aims and objectives of the Wollongong Cycling Strategy. If you’ve a passion for bikes and cycling, I encourage you to consider getting involved.’’

The Cycling Technical Advisory Group is being set up to provide Council with detailed technical feedback in the planning of key pieces of cycling-related infrastructure such as the Cringila Hills Recreation and Mountain Bike Park, learn to ride facilities or cycling network priorities.

The Group’s membership will include Council staff, community representatives with significant experience in cycling including from key local cycling bodies, and a representative of AusCycling.

The Cycling Champions Advisory Group, meanwhile, will provide input into Council’s planning and organisation as a host of the 2022 UCI Road World Championship.

The Group’s members will act as ambassadors for the event, provide input into the promotion of cycling to the community and provide a forum for discussion to help guide Council’s strategic planning.

The membership will include Council staff, representatives from Ride Nation and Wollongong 2022, and up to seven community representatives with an interest in cycling.

“It is a great time for cyclists or those with an interest in cycling – there is so much happening in this space at the moment,’’ Cr Bradbery said.

“At the start of the week, we adopted Wollongong City Council’s Cycling Strategy 2030 that sets out our focus for the next 10 years, and accepted the tender to begin work the early stages of the Cringila Hills Masterplan’s mountain bike and walking trails. Then, we’ve had the announcement of the National Juniors and Masters Road Championships yesterday. It’s an exciting time and I look forward to working with passionate cycling advocates on the next steps for our city.’’

More details on the Cycling Technical Advisory Group, and Cycling Champions Advisory Group as well as the registration forms are available on Council’s website.
