Prepare for bushfire season with free garden organics collections

Friday 26 November 2021

Prepare your green waste for drop off

We’re supporting our residents to prepare for the Summer bush fire season by offering additional garden organics drop-off opportunities this December.

The free garden organics drop-off is an easy way for residents to clear their property and remove excess small branches, shrubs, fallen leaves, twigs and debris ahead of peak bushfire season.

There will be three free garden organics collections across December in addition to the weekly pick up of the green-lidded FOGO bins which can also be filled with garden organics as well as household food waste.

The collections will take place on:

  • Sunday 5 December 2021 at Rex Jackson Oval, Helensburgh from 8am to 12pm.
  • Sunday 12 December 2021 at Ziems Park, Corrimal from 8am to 12pm.
  • Saturday 18 December 2021 at Purry Burry Reserve, Primbee from 8am to 12pm.

“The threat of summer bushfires is always real for our community – particularly given our proximity to the escarpment. It’s important to stay on top of the build-up of garden vegetation at this time of the year,” Wollongong City Council Director Infrastructure + Works Joanne Page said.

“By taking these proactive actions and bringing garden organics to these free drop-off points, residents are taking action to manage the risk of fire on their property and supporting the protection of their community, now and into the future.

“Our recent wet weather has provided ideal growing conditions for grass and plants across Wollongong. With growth comes maintenance, and any cuttings, clippings or leaves should be kept out of our gutters and placed in green bins or dropped off at any of our upcoming collections.” Ms Page said.

Please note that no food organic waste will be accepted at these collections. Normal residential quantities of green waste will be accepted – for example trailer and carloads, not tip trucks or commercial vehicles. Residents are also asked to only bring tree branches up to 75 mm diameter in roughly metre lengths to assist with the compactors capacity to deal with the waste. Proof of residency, for example a driver’s licence, is also required at the drop off points.

Residents are asked to drive into the car park and queue in their vehicles until reaching Remondis staff who will remove the garden organics from the vehicle and/or trailer. Residents are only permitted to leave their vehicle to remove a covering.

Our collection events will be contactless drop-offs and will require residents to check-in using a QR code. Please ensure that you follow the Public Health Order when at our drop off locations and stay home and get tested if you’re feeling unwell.

The green organics collected at the events will be taken to Soilco for processing into organic compost.
