Queerstories returns to Wollongong

Tuesday 13 October 2020

Roll out the red carpet! Wollongong City Libraries is excited to announce the return of Maeve Marsden’s sell-out show Queerstories to Wollongong on Friday 30 October 2020.

Queerstories is returning to Wollongong and will be presented to a live audience at the Wollongong Town Hall.

Hosted by Wollongong City Libraries, this inclusive event brings together comedy and storytelling to create an evening of unexpected LGBTQIA+ tales of pride, prejudice, love, life, humour and more.

Tickets are $20 plus booking fee and can be purchased via the Wollongong Town Hall website.

Wollongong City Council Library and Community Services Manager Jenny Thompson said that the Library was eager to bring a live event to the Wollongong community and Library members.

“We’ve really missed our events and library programs these past few months. We had to cancel our first Queerstories of the year which was to be part of our June Pride Month celebrations due to the pandemic restrictions which forced the cancellation of events across the globe.

“Now that restrictions are easing, and our Libraries have re-opened to visitors, we’re looking at how we can safely return to normal and resume some of our much-loved programs and events. Queerstories is destined to become one of our regular events in the Library calendar.”

Queerstories is a comedy and storytelling show that first started in Sydney and has since made its way around Australia. This will be the second time the popular show travels south to audiences in the Illawarra following the success of its Wollongong 2019 debut at the Wollongong Art Gallery.

Writer, producer and performer Maeve Marsden said that she looked forward to bringing Queerstories back to the stage.

"I'm thrilled to be able to bring Queerstories back to Wollongong, especially as it'll be one of the first events back after having to pause the event series during lockdown. Last year we held a beautiful Queerstories event with fabulous local storytellers, it will be wonderful to come together as a community after such a tough year," said Maeve Marsden.

The line-up for the event will be announced closer to the date. Keep an eye on the Wollongong City Libraries website and Facebook page for the latest updates.

Wollongong City Libraries will be working with the Merrigong Theatre Company to ensure Queerstories is a COVID-safe event for all attendees and performers. This includes a modified checkerboard seating plan and reduced event capacity.

“We’ll be asking that all attendees follow good social distancing practices. Make sure you wash your hands and use hand sanitiser, keep 1.5metres apart from other guests and stay home if you’re feeling unwell,” said Jenny Thompson.
