Working together to reduce our emissions

We’re taking a research-based approach to identify the actions Council can take to reduce emissions and meet our net zero targets for Council operations and the City of Wollongong.

Council is reviewing the Climate Change Mitigation Plan 2020-2022, to make sure it’s a current and responsive document that focuses on new data and opportunities. As a part of this work, we’re interested in learning what our community are already doing to reduce their emissions and how Council can provide support to community members in their efforts to further reduce emissions.

From now until 15 December 2022, community members will be able to share their thoughts by completing the Climate Change survey and participating in one of our engagement events.

It’s all part of Wollongong City Council’s goal to support our community to reduce their emissions and contribute to making Wollongong a climate friendly city. We know that we need our community’s full support to make this vision a reality, and we are seeking community feedback on a range of topics such as:

  • Identifying the priority actions from a list of emission reduction options
  • Understanding what our community may already be doing to reduce their impact on climate change
  • Recognising the challenges we face in reducing emissions
  • Identifying how Council can best support our community to make changes.

Have lots of ideas you’d like to share? You can get involved by completing the online survey on the Our Wollongong website or by attending a community event. Stay tuned as we’ll be sharing event information soon on Council’s Facebook page and our website.

We’ve chosen to start these discussions during Global Climate Change Week – an international project that seeks to encourage communities to get involved in planet-positive actions and solutions.

“Under our initial Climate Change Mitigation Plan, Council has achieved a number of the actions we set out to tackle. Some of the things we said we’d do and have since ticked off the list included introducing and championing FOGO to Wollongong residents, deploying solar panel on Council buildings, and advocating for change at a state and federal level,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“We have a way to go to reach our emissions targets of net-zero by 2030 for Council operations and net-zero by 2050 for our community, but we’re moving in the right direction and taking positive steps. We’ve been inspired by the overwhelming support of our community for climate action. Climate change is a global issue and something that will need to be tackled at all levels of government and internationally.”

Feedback collected through the online survey and in-person community events will be used to draft the Climate Change Mitigation Plan 2023-2027.

“We have an opportunity to make a meaningful difference here in the City of Wollongong. There’s so much good work and ambition in our community to make a change on a local level,” Cr Bradbery said.

“We want to move towards a net zero emission future by building upon what we already have achieved and finding new ways to support our residents, businesses, and community members to make change.

“Now’s your chance to be part of the conversation and share your thoughts on this project. We’re keen to understand our community’s views on how we can help reduce emissions for our city as well as Council operations.”
