Let's Talk Skateparks!

Over the next two years, Wollongong City Council will be working on the delivery of four exciting projects related to skate parks.

We are looking to deliver two new skate facilities in Wollongong and Thirroul. We’re also supporting the Port Kembla Chamber of Commerce and Industry as they work through plans for a local skate space in their suburb thanks NSW Government grant funding under the Port Kembla Community Investment Fund. We also have committed $100k to mobile skate equipment to be rotated around the region.

Our Vision

Why are we building new skate parks?

We know that skateparks are an important place for people, young and old and we understand there is currently unmet demand for skate opportunities throughout the city.

We have committed funding to deliver skateparks in the Wollongong City Centre and Northern suburbs, as well as moving forward on the purchase and delivery of mobile skate equipment in the region. These plans are listed in our Delivery Program 2022-2026, and they’re a priority for us to deliver.

We are committed to supporting emerging and unstructured sport and recreation pursuits, including skate/scooter/BMX facilities – particularly in light of the increased popularity of BMX cycling and the inclusion of skateboarding as Olympic sport. We have plans to provide infrastructure to support this style of recreation activity, and our commitment is covered in the Sportsgrounds and Recreation Facilities Strategy 2022-2027.

We are working to deliver on our promise and create state of the art facilities that are meaningful for our community.

How will the skate park projects be run?

Each one will be different and unique in their own way. However, we want to capture a wide range of voices, ages and abilities in our projects. We will make sure we get the word out as far and wide we can by using our various community-focussed communications channels, Council’s website and 'Our Wollongong' project pages to notify those interested in the projects. We will also reach out to schools, organisations and related businesses to help us hear from as many people as possible.

How can I be involved?

We want the community to be involved in the planning and delivery of these new parks. As we work towards these 4 projects, we are asking the community to tell us who you are. We want to know our skate park users, so that we can help deliver 3 exceptional parks and an ongoing mobile park.
