Japanese Kamishibai Storytelling at Wollongong Library
Kamishibai is a Japanese tradition of telling stories using picture cards. Originating as street theatre in Tokyo and Osaka, kamishibai has become a treasured part of Japanese children's culture and can be found in schools and libraries across Japan.
In this session Alexander Brown will share his love of Japanese kamishibai through a collection of stories that includes a traditional Japanese folktale and a story about the atomic bombing of Hiroshima told from the perspective of a cat.
Experience the unique shared feeling (kyokan) kamishibai produces as the stories unfold. Please note that this performance includes descriptions of war and the impact of a nuclear bomb.
