Wollongong City Council is moving forward on plans for a new community centre and library for Helensburgh.

Right now, we’re preparing for a comprehensive planning and design process for the facility that is planned for construction from autumn 2027.

While we heard from the community in 2017 and 2020, we’re taking the opportunity to check-in and confirm what we were told previously still meets community expectations.

“When we first spoke with the community about a new library and community centre facility for Helensburgh, we hadn’t been through a global pandemic. And, even in 2020, COVID-19 was in its infancy in terms of its impact and legacy,’’ Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said.

“Over the past four years the way people study, work and socialise has changed and we need to make sure that what we’re planning for Helensburgh and the surrounding suburbs meets people’s needs now and into the future.

“All the feedback we’ve received previously will be taken into consideration, but we want to make sure we’re not missing anything and that’s why we’re doing this check-in. It’s important to us we get this facility right.’’

Cr Brown said there were also a number of residents who’ve moved into Helensburgh in recent years who may also like the opportunity to have their say on such a vital community space.

“Libraries and community centres are at the heart of any community. Helensburgh and its neighbouring suburbs are no different,’’ she said.

“Just like the current library, we want this to be a well-used space that has a versatility in its design that allows for it to be used and enjoyed in a range of ways. This also goes for its community centre and rooms.’’

There are a range of ways to be involved in the community check in. You can:

  • fill in a quick poll or online survey on Council’s website
  • pick up a paper survey from the current library
  • share a photo or story about 53-55 Walker Street online
  • speak with Council staff on Saturday 26 October at Helensburgh Lions Fair in Charles Harper Park between 9am-3pm
  • email engagement@wollongong.nsw.gov.au
  • write to Council at Locked Bag 8821, Wollongong DC NSW 2500
  • or call Council on 4227 7111

Just be sure to submit feedback before Thursday 31 October 2024.
