NSW Government seeking feedback on draft Bellambi People and Place Plan
The NSW Government has released its draft Bellambi People and Place Plan for community feedback, with the document now on public exhibition. It continues the State agency’s investigation into the renewal of the Bellambi estate.
Homes NSW has been working closely with residents, local organisations and the community since August 2024 to understand their needs and priorities.
Developed with input from hundreds of local residents and community members, the draft Bellambi People and Place Plan outlines the community’s vision, directions, and recommendations to guide the estate’s renewal through planning, design, construction and delivery.
As planning for the renewal continues, Wollongong City Council is working to capture and preserve the rich history of the Bellambi area. Through its Local Studies service, Council will partner with the community to gather stories, memories and photographs that reflect the area’s unique social and cultural identity. These contributions will be shared on the Illawarra Stories platform, creating a lasting record of Bellambi’s past and the people who have shaped it.
The draft Plan will be on public exhibition for community viewing until Wednesday 23 July 2025, with a range of community engagement activities planned by Homes NSW to allow people to view the draft plan and share their feedback both online and in-person.
Community input will help Homes NSW finalise the plan to ensure it reflects the priorities, aspirations and needs of the people who live, work or spend time in Bellambi, with local residents encouraged to have their say.
Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said Council will support any positive action to address housing supply needs in our LGA.
“A shortage of social and affordable housing is not unique to Wollongong, but it’s vitally important that we work with all levels of government, including Homes NSW, to address the issue,” Cr Brown said.
“We know that housing availability is a priority issue for our community, and we need to consider how we can ease housing stress in the short-term but also consider the best approaches to future housing needs, including the surrounding infrastructure and services that communities will need into the future.
“That requires collaboration with State bodies like Homes NSW, and I encourage all interested residents to participate in this engagement process.”
Homes NSW will host a free community barbecue at the Bellambi Neighbourhood Centre on Friday 4 July, with representatives from Homes NSW and Wollongong City Council in attendance.
As well as providing feedback to Homes NSW on the draft Bellambi People and Place Plan, the community is being encouraged to share their photos and stories of Bellambi’s history with Council’s Local Studies Library team who will be there on the day. Council’s Youth Services, Community Engagement and Waste and Environment Services will also be available to talk to.
For renewal to take place in the future, Homes NSW will need to submit a rezoning application to the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure to change the planning controls that apply to the land in the Bellambi renewal area. A rezoning application is expected to be submitted to the Department in late-2025.
