North Wollongong Seawall and Surf Club

We're working to extend the Emma McKeon AM Promenade at North Wollongong Beach.

When complete, the new seawall will help to protect our coastline and make the North Beach area more enjoyable and accessible for everyone.

Stage 2 works

Stage 2 works are expected to start at the end of February-early March 2026.

This stage will continue the seawall work done in Stage 1 at the northern end of the beach (see below).

We'll be replacing the ageing crib wall between North Wollongong Surf Club and North Beach Bathers Pavilion with a new stepped wall. The design includes concrete bleachers with stairs linking the promenade to the beach. There'll also be an accessible beach ramp and lower terraced area near the Bathers Pavilion to provide better access for the whole community.

The design for this project follows extensive consultation and engagement with the community and coastal engineering specialists. It also considers heritage assets in the precinct, which will be protected.

As part of the project, we'll also be doing essential maintenance on the kiosk and pavilion buildings, including external repairs and drainage improvements. The works to these heritage buildings are proudly funded by the NSW Government and Wollongong City Council.

The cafe and kiosk will be closed in March on a date to be confirmed following finalisation of the construction program. They will remain closed throughout construction. The Bathers Pavilion will remain open, but there may be some changes to how you access the building while work is happening.

Patrols by Council lifeguards and volunteer lifesavers will also continue as usual during this project.

Stage 1 works

Stage 1 works were completed between 2021 and 2023. In 2024, we officially named the area the Emma McKeon AM Promenade in honour of the Wollongong-raised Olympian.

Stage 1 included replacement of the northern end of the seawall in front of the Surf Club with a new stepped wall, seating, fencing, landscaping, lighting and stormwater upgrades.

We also refurbished the North Wollongong Surf Club building, including:

  • Reconfiguring internal space
  • Installing an elevator to provide DDA compliant access to the whole building
  • Constructing additional balcony areas
  • Other works including asbestos removal, structural works, replacement of doors and windows, installation of new wall linings, accessible toilet installation, ceiling replacement, complete electrical and lighting upgrade.

The Stage 1 seawall works were supported by technical and financial assistance from the NSW Government’s Coastal and Estuary Management Program.
