From the Lord Mayor's Office
Delightful prize afternoon for the Kawasaki Junior Cultural Exchange
Earlier this week I had the pleasure of meeting and congratulating the 2024 Kawasaki Junior Culture Art and Essay Prize winners.
The prize is supported by the Kawasaki Shinkin Bank and has been running for the past 33 years.
It’s an important part of our Sister City Relationship and the colourful artworks of some of the previous winners are displayed within meeting rooms in Council’s Administration Building. The vivid works provide an insight into the creative talents of these young artists.
And, while the four students from Kawasaki joined the online meeting from Japan, there were also four student representatives from the Illawarra Grammar School in the room who took the opportunity to put their Japanese language skills to the test as part of the afternoon meeting and presentation.
“I commend you on your achievements, your work is certainly amazing and beyond your years,’’ I said to the winning students.
“You are all extremely talented and should be very proud of your ability. As winners of the Junior Cultural Prize, you help open our eyes about your city and your culture. Your artistic expression helps to strengthen the relationship between Wollongong and Kawasaki.
“The Kawasaki Junior Cultural Prize provides a real opportunity to show the international understanding which can exist between two cities.’’
