I am absolutely thrilled for the current and future residents of West Dapto that the NSW Government has announced the location of the New West Dapto Primary School, including a public preschool on Shone Avenue, Wongawilli.

Wollongong City Council has been working closely with staff at the NSW Department of Education for many years now and long advocated for a new school at West Dapto.

We’re well aware of the challenges this fast-growing community faces, and the new school that’s planned to open in Term 1 2029 will no doubt be welcomed by those who are moving into the new housing areas now and are starting, or considering starting their families.

This school will serve a vital need for the community, particularly residents of Wongawilli, Kembla Grange and Stream Hill.

This is an area which is only going to continue to grow. Already it’s the fastest growing residential area outside the Greater Sydney Region, and it’s crucial to our region’s housing future.

It also highlights the importance of upgrading essential road infrastructure, like the upgrades to West Dapto Road, Fowlers Road, and Cleveland Road that are currently underway, to connect this growing community to these services and facilities.

These projects form part of a $110 million investment for West Dapto through Council’s current four-year infrastructure delivery program, with essential funding support from the State and Federal governments.

In addition to Council’s committed infrastructure projects that enhance access and movement within the West Dapto Urban Release Area, the successful delivery of the Northcliffe Drive Extension and the Western Ring Road requires dedicated funding and support from State Government. These regionally significant transport links are essential to unlocking housing and employment lands, improving flood resilience, and ensuring safe, reliable connectivity between the West Dapto Urban Release Area and key centres such as Wollongong and Port Kembla.

We will continue to liaise and work closely with the NSW Government to support construction of West Dapto Public School and supporting infrastructure throughout the years ahead.
