Meet our FOGO Heroes!

Tuesday 5 September 2023

Not every hero wears a cape, but if these FOGO stars did it would be a cape made from recycled material.

This September, Wollongong City Council is launching a brand-new FOGO campaign that celebrates the hidden heroes who live in our community. These are everyday people, some who may be your neighbours and friends, but who are also secretly FOGO experts.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said that since Council first rolled-out FOGO in 2020, so many Wollongong residents have started using the new system.

“Council has been blown away by our community’s positive response to FOGO. In 2022, we diverted 56,000 tonnes of emissions from landfill. That’s the equivalent of removing 12,462 cars from the road for a year,” Cr Bradbery said.

“That’s an incredible community effort. At the same time, we know that not everyone has jumped on board yet. We have new residents who may have moved recently and are using their green-lidded bins for food scraps for the very first time. There are also many people in our community who want to participate but are unsure about what to put in the FOGO bin, as well as some who aren’t using it at all.

“Our focus for this FOGO campaign is on the people who aren’t using FOGO or could improve how they currently use it. To inspire change, we’ve called on our community experts to unmask themselves as FOGO Heroes. Each resident takes a different approach to FOGO and have tips and tricks to share on how they make FOGO work for them. We’re also inviting everyone in the community to become a FOGO Hero simply by committing to using their FOGO weekly.”

FOGO Heroes Assemble!

The Lone Wolf – Meet Simon

Simon lives alone with his two dogs. He might not have a lot of food waste, but he still uses FOGO and puts his green bin out weekly because he knows every little bit helps.

The Domestic Goddess – Meet Anne

Anne likes a neat and tidy kitchen and has many tricks and tips to share on how to use FOGO without the yuck factor.

The Dream Team – Meet Radhika and Jayanth

Radhika and Jayanth work together, and they each have a role to play when completing household chores to help each other out.

The Space Savers – Meet Rachel and Charlie

As a family with young children, Rachel and Charlie are saving space in their red bin by using FOGO wherever they can. For some residents, if you reduce how much waste enters your red-lidded bin, you can downsize to a smaller bin, this will cost you less.

The Green Thumbs – Melissa and David

Melissa and David know their way around a compost. But this doesn’t stop them from FOGO-ing the things they can’t compost at home.

Can you be a FOGO Hero too?  Learn more on Council’s website.
