Come together to celebrate the Illawarra Hawks

Wednesday 26 March 2025

Wollongong City Council will host a community event in the Crown Street Mall this Thursday night to celebrate the Illawarra Hawks 2025 NBL Championship win.

We’re working with the Illawarra Hawks on the event, which coincides with the Thursday Night Markets and provides an opportunity for passionate fans and supporters to acknowledge the efforts of their team.

“Wollongong threw their support behind the Illawarra Hawks and their cheers nearly raised the roof of the WEC on Sunday afternoon,’’ Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said.

“With the final game being a sell-out, we know not everyone had the opportunity to be in the WEC for the game. This provides everyone the chance to come along, see some of the team in person and show their appreciation for their title-winning efforts.’’

The event will include an appearance by a number of Hawks players, a celebration cake cutting and music from a DJ. It starts at 5.30pm and finishes at 9pm.

Players joining in the fun include Davo Hickey, Wani Swaka Lo Buluk, Daniel Grida, Sam Froling, Luca Yates, Todd Blanchfield, Mason Peatling, Brad Ballinger and Kobe McDowell-White. While coaching staff including Justin Tatum, Sam Gruggen, Matt Flinn, Joel 'JK' Khalu and Tom Cranney will also be there.

“We’re working to get all the details locked in right now and we know a number of the players have already had to leave the city for other sporting commitments, but this is going to be a great celebration.

“I’d encourage everyone to wear their red and black and come along and applaud the team that has done us so proud.’’
