Weather preparation and updates

With the BOM warning of heavy rain, flash flooding and damaging winds, Wollongong City Council’s crews are on the ground preparing the city for the upcoming weather front.

Updates about weather impacts known to Council are listed below. We are regularly reviewing this information, but please be aware that details may change without notice.

Preparing for rain: sandbags

Rainfalls have been forecast for our area in coming days. To help residents prepare, we're providing sand to five locations across the city to help residents fill their own sandbags and prepare their properties. The SES will supply bags at these locations, but we know these run out quickly.

Sand will be available at these locations while supplies last:

  • Bellambi Boat Ramp Overflow carpark
  • Fairy Meadow Beach carpark
  • Fred Finch Park carpark, Berkeley
  • Rex Jackson Oval, Walker Street, Helensburgh
  • Kanahooka Park carpark, Kanahooka Rd, Dapto

You'll need to bring a shovel and your own bags. If you don't have hessian bags, 'green' supermarket bags can also be effective.

For more advice about preparing for heavy rain, visit the SES website.

Stay safe

Follow the below tips from the NSW SES to stay safe during the upcoming weather event:

  • Park your car under secure cover and away from trees and powerlines
  • Secure or put away items, such as outdoor furniture, trampolines and roofing iron that could blow around in strong winds
  • Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences or solar panels
  • Report fallen power lines to your energy provider
  • Monitor the conditions and keep an eye out for warnings issued by the BOM or NSW SES
  • Be vigilant on the roads and make smart choices, do not enter flood water

If you in an emergency or life-threatening situation, please call Triple Zero (000). Call the NSW SES on 132 500 if you need assistance with any of the below:

  • Has a fallen tree blocked access? i.e. front door/driveway/road
  • Is a tree threatening to fall on your property or driveway?
  • Is your roof damaged or leaking?
  • Is there damage to your property that you cannot fix yourself?
