Be waste-wise this festive season

Wednesday 18 December 2024

No matter how waste-wise you are, it’s certainly the season for generating waste.

While we can all do our bit to try and reduce the amount of rubbish we create at this time of year by only buying what we need, shopping with a grocery list and re-usable bags, and recycling where possible.

But even with the best of intentions, we can still find our bins holding more than usual.

The good news is, there are options when it comes to disposing correctly of household waste.

If your recycling bin is overflowing, we’re hosting free recycling drop-off events between Christmas and New Year.

They’re being held on:

  • 27 December at Fred Finch Park, Berkeley
  • 28 December at Rex Jackson Oval, Helensburgh
  • 30 December at Ziems Park, Corrimal

Residents can bring excess cardboard, household recycling, and clean and dry soft plastics (ones that that can easily be scrunched into a ball) along.

If you’re not able to make one of the drop-off dates, it’s also always free to bring household recycling and cardboard (excluding soft plastics) to the Wollongong Waste and Resource Recovery Park’s Community Recycling Centre. The Centre is easy to use, and makes getting your house ready for 2025 easy.

Don’t forget, our hard-working Remondis staff enjoy time with their family and friends on Wednesday 25 December.

So, if this is your ordinary bin day, this means you’ve got an additional day to fill your bins for collection. Just be sure to place your bins kerbside, as normal, as they’ll be collected on 26 or 27 December.

While household bins aren’t being emptied on Christmas Day, the bins in public foreshore areas will be.

In fact, Council’s hard-working early risers will increase their routines to keep your public facilities, spaces, beaches and parks looking clean and tidy across the busy season ahead.

Working from Helensburgh in the north to Yallah in the south, our crews will be out each and every day, including weekends and public holidays.

If you see them, say hello. They’re a great bunch of people whose hard work helps keep our popular beaches and parks looking beautiful at a very busy time of year.
