From the Lord Mayor's Office
Don’t risk rock fishing unsafely
Rock fishing is considered by many to be the most dangerous sports people can do.
Certainly, in our Local Government Area, we’ve seen some very tragic outcomes to people fishing off rock platforms along our coastline including at Port Kembla.
At Council, our staff have been part of the emergency personnel who have been involved in search and rescue events.
No-one wants to see another rock fishing tragedy off our coastline, but particularly at a time of year that’s focused on celebrations with family and friends.
This week, Council held a media opportunity with NSW Police and NSW Surf Life Saving at Hill 60.
Media Release: Don't rock up without a life jacket this Christmas-New Year period
Our intention was to provide news organisations with the opportunity to gather interviews and footage that raise awareness of the risks of rock fishing and the safety measures fishers should follow.
I sincerely hope that our local media do their bit to raise awareness of this dangerous sport both locally and further afield, and how people can help keep themselves safer.
The steps are straightforward:
- Wear a life jacket. It’s compulsory when rock fishing in the Wollongong Local Government Area.
- Check the weather and tide conditions – not just before you go to fish, but also while you’re on the platform. Always consider possible escape routes should the conditions change.
- Wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
- Always fish with others.
- Carry a phone, EPIRB or radio.
If you are thinking of rock fishing this summer, I ask you to think about your safety and the safety of others when you do so.
While there’s nothing like fresh fish, no fish is worth your life.
