Shared paths a step in supporting an active city

Thursday 14 November 2024

I know our community values shared pathways and pleasingly there is a lot of work happening right now in suburbs across the city to build or renew these important assets.

That’s because a key part of a having a liveable and enjoyable Wollongong is how we can explore and get around on foot, bike or scooter. Shared paths can help support this.

Earlier this week, I visited one of the new shared paths being delivered at Reserve Street in West Wollongong, providing a vital east west link.

With most of the pathway finished, it’s looking fabulous. I popped in to see how the final works were coming along and was welcomed with lovely smiles and hellos from the Central Works crew.

This path will provide a safe and accessible way to walk and cycle to the nearby tennis courts and Gilmore Park and will be a great addition to our existing cycling network.

Reserve Street is just one example of the recent road and footpath works completed. Over the past few months, we’ve built new footpaths including at Union Street in Coniston, carried out road reconstructions in streets such as Weringa Avenue in Lake Heights and Gahans Lane in Woonona, and completed footpath reconstructions like at Derribong Drive in Cordeaux Heights.

It’s important we continue our commitment to creating and maintaining our city’s footpath and shared paths. It supports an active community and helps people to move around Wollongong.

We always welcome feedback on our plans and every year, we plan for future projects including footpaths which we know are in high demand across the city, and next year our community will have a chance to tell us what they think. You can find out more information here.

In the meantime, if you want to see a snapshot of works happening right now, please visit the Current Works and Projects webpage.
