From the Lord Mayor's Office
The battle on our beaches
The weather was hot and so was the competition at Woonona Beach this week as our city hosted the Australian Junior Surfing Titles.
This is a huge event with the winners of the U16 and U18 Junior Men and Women earning a spot on the Irukandjis Team to represent Australia at the Isa World Junior Championships.
It’s phenomenal watching the skills and talents of these surfers – there are approximately 250 of them competing in this prestigious event at Woonona Beach.
Wollongong City Council is proud to support this national event coming to our city. It’s a terrific opportunity to promote the city to an Australia-wide audience with the event being broadcast live.
It’s also the chance to see future Stephanie Gilmour’s, Mick Fanning’s, Sally Fitzgibbons’ and Tyler Wrights’ to showcase their skills to appreciative locals. Plus, it might even inspire some of us to pick up a board and give surfing a go.
While I’m no Layne Beachley when it comes to surfing (and you’re not likely to ever find me on a surfboard) I am in awe of the physically demanding nature of this sport and how you’re very much at the mercy of Mother Nature when it comes to waves.
The competition is on until Sunday at Woonona Beach. If the conditions aren’t up to what’s needed for competition there, the event may move to another beach between Stanwell Park and City Beach.
If you have the opportunity, don’t miss out on checking out these talented future stars in action!
