From the Lord Mayor's Office
Valuing the Kawasaki connection
For more than 35 years, Wollongong has valued our Sister City Relationship with Kawasaki City in Japan.
This relationship has benefitted Wollongong in many ways. There are the opportunities for cultural and educational exchange and learnings, as well as essential economic and business connections thanks to the number of Japanese businesses which have a close connection and interest in Wollongong.
Recently I welcomed a delegation of leaders from Kawasaki City. They were visiting Wollongong to learn more about the city, and to share information and knowledge around industry, emissions reduction, urban planning and environmental management. They also visited Port Kembla to learn more about port management.
This recent visit is the second time I’ve Engaged with representatives from the city in the two months that I’ve been Lord Mayor and I’ve been struck by the synergies between our two cities and the enthusiasm from our guests to learn about us.

Kawasaki City has always reached out to our city and residents in solidarity during difficult times, whether that’s natural disasters or the pandemic. I look forward to continuing to foster the strong relationship we have built since 1988. For our whole community, it’s important we build on our mutual respect and understanding and find opportunities to co-operate, share ideas and encourage business investment and economic activity in our respective cities.
