Last updated: 2pm, Saturday 6 April 2024

Wollongong City Council is prioritising immediate clean-up to keep our community safe following extreme weather experienced by the city overnight.

Council staff will continue to monitor the conditions and will provide timely updates as required on Council’s Facebook page. We will provide more information as we work through assessing damage and critical areas today.

In the meantime, see below for a current service update.

Clean-up

Council is offering free, additional household cleanup collections for residents impacted by flooding.

Residents impacted by flooding should contact Remondis directly on Monday on 1300 362 360 (open Monday to Friday) to book an urgent cleanup. For more information, read our media release: 'Clean-up in action for those impacted by flooding'.

Beaches

All 17 patrolled beaches in the Wollongong Local Government Area (LGA) are closed due to challenging sea conditions. Council Lifeguards will continue to monitor the situation and will reopen the beaches when it is safe to do so.

Pools

Some of our pools have been closed due to water contamination caused by wet weather. Check our pools webpage for updates on closures.

Roads

In addition to the road closures on Live Traffic NSW, as of this morning (2pm, Sat 6 April), road closures are in place at:

  • Flinders Rd, North Wollongong - now open
  • Darkes Rd, Kembla Grange
  • West Dapto Rd, Kembla Grange
  • Bong Bong Rd, Dapto
  • Princes Hwy, near Unanderra Pool - now open
  • Sections of the M1
  • Princes Hwy, Corrimal
  • Mt Keira Rd, Harry Graham Drive – top end near Clive Bissell Dr and at lower end near Rural Fire Station
  • Princes Hwy, Woonona.

Council has also installed ‘water over road’ signage at several locations including:

  • Squires Way, near the Innovation Campus
  • Elliots Road access to Fairy Meadow Beach
  • Chalmers Street, Balgownie.

Council crews are working to clean-up mud washed onto Lemrac Ave, Corrimal and Koloona Ave, Figtree.

If you must drive this weekend, drive to the conditions and do not drive through flood water.

Sportsgrounds

All Council sportsgrounds remain closed. We will continue to monitor the conditions and reopen as soon as we can. Check the Sportsgrounds webpage for regular updates.

Wollongong Botanic Garden & Mount Keira Summit Park

The Wollongong Botanic Garden and Mount Keira Summit Park are both closed due to current wet weather and flooding damage.

The Saturday Plant Sale at the Botanic Garden has been cancelled.

We will share an update once these locations reopen on the Wollongong Botanic Garden website and Facebook page.

Libraries

Warrawong Library is closed due to flood waters preventing access. All other local libraries remain open.
