There are many chemicals around your house that should be kept out of your bin and our landfill. This can include cleaning products, poisons, acids, pool chemicals and more.
Household Chemical Cleanout events
We work with the NSW Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to hold two free Household Chemical Cleanout events each year in the Wollongong City Council area.
Details of what can be included in these cleanouts can be found on the EPA website.
See the Household Chemical Cleanout flyer PDF, 535.84 KB for a list of events in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven from March to June 2026.
When you’re dropping off items at a cleanout event, make sure you handle and transport chemicals carefully. Each item must be no larger than 20kg or 20 litres.
Please note, asbestos cannot be included in chemical cleanouts.
Other problem items
Household Chemical Cleanout events are currently the only service in our area that accepts household chemicals.
However, you can take many other problem waste items like paints, batteries, gas bottles and more to our Community Recycling Centre (CRC)
