Mattresses

Need to get rid of an old mattress? Don't send it to landfill - recycle it!

Mattresses can contain many types of materials that can be reused or recycled, including fabric and upholstery, metal (springs and coils), foam and wood.

Book a free on-call household cleanup

Each household can book two free cleanups every year, and up to two mattresses can be included in each collection.

Mattresses in your household cleanup will be recycled by our partner, Mattrec.

Take your mattress(es) to our waste depot

Mattresses can also be taken to our waste depot, and we'll make sure they get recycled.

Mattrec

We send mattresses collected through household cleanups or dropped at our waste depot to Mattrec.

Mattrec is a Port Kembla-based company that recycles mattresses using state-of-the-art, fully automated processes. They can recycle all types of mattresses, including box spring, memory foam and other specialty mattress foams.

Note, you can also book directly with Mattrec to have your old mattress collected from your home and recycled for a fee. This is not a Council service.

Other options

If you're buying a new mattress, some retailers may offer a free or paid service to get rid of your old mattress.

We recommend checking that the old mattress will be recycled before you agree to a disposal service.
